Is that right? I really know very little about the country after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, I'm afraid to say. However, I'd always been given to understand that the Turks were quite fiercely insistent about the separation of church and state. Maybe that line is getting increasingly blurred these days?

Oh yes. Al Qaeda has cells all over Turkey that continually seek to destabilise the Republic. Only the Army holds this "secular" state together.

This is NOT American propaganda - this is direct from my Turkish Friends, some of whom were still living there as little as 24 months ago.
