$\"Gravatar\"$ Although conservatives may share some viewpoints, they definitely don't share all. It's people like this five-feet person that make me cringe.

When I post on conservative blogs objecting to something negative about gays and lesbians, for example, I get painted as some kind of fawning liberal wannabe traitor -- and this is after knowing my own worldview is basically conservative! And I hope readers here know by now I don't resort to vulgar language or polemics to make a point -- so it's pointless ad hominem attacks.

In fairness, however, I've gotten the same treatment on leftie blogs, too (but not here!).

I just distance myself from those conservatives who spew that kind of drivel. The main American conservative blogs I like are instapundit.com and jameslileks.com (which, unfortunately, don't have comments sections). The main Canadian ones I like are blazingcatfur.com and covenantzone.com, mostly because I share their disdain for PC. (And by that I mean egregious PC -- true hate speech versus \"hurt feelings.\")

For the record, I'm one who thinks the police puppy ad got as much attention as it did because people feel this kind of PC has gone too far. And, thankfully, I've spoken with several Muslims (friends I've made online) about this and they agree with me. Every time some hothead complains about something like this, THEY cringe.

By the way -- five-feet and others like her really need to get a clue about Muslims. She should visit muslimmatters.org for an excellent site to begin with.

I can relate to your dilemma of getting mischaracterized as a \"leftie\" I used to regularly get slammed by a certain group of far-left people as a Republican \"plant\" when I posted on Air America. They viewed anyone espousing a relatively moderate point of view as almost treasonous. It was pretty funny actually.

The whole left-right paradigm gets awfully wearisome at times. Very few people can be said to hold altogether consistent positions across the board on every issue when framed in that simplistic kind of way.

Unfortunately, it's all too easy to fall into an antagonistic \"us and them\" kind of mentality. I'm quite guilty of it myself more often than I'd like to be. It's incredibly difficult to be \"fair and balanced\" sometimes.

It DOES get wearisome trying to debate with closed-up mindsets sometimes. But I make myself do it. That Puritan work ethic, maybe $\"\"$

Ideology is simply a form of mind control, and a particularly insidious form, since the sufferers line up to have thoughts ladled into them just so that they *won't* have to expend any precious mental energy on actually thinking about an issue or two...

How we arrive at the particular \"ideology\" that we do would be an interesting subject in and of itself. Speaking personally, but like most people quite likely, my beliefs on things are an evolving \"work in progress\" that's not based on any one particular set of ideas or philosophy. The idea of being dogmatic about things is quite alien to me.
