Aside: Turkey is looking to reinterpret the Hadith BBC article
-----
I've often wondered how people justify a priori contempt and condescension towards foreign people and places. It seems to be more proof that some people just want to undo the Enlightenment.
If you can't look around the world and see good ideas and things worth learning, then I'm sorry to say that the only reasonable thing to feel is shame. I pity such people.

Dave — It’s a concept that’s completely foreign to me.
But I do mean that seriously; I really can’t relate to the notion of xenophobia at all. Perhaps it has something to do with feeling from a young age that I was a citizen of the world rather than some parochial villager.
Maybe that was a way of making sense of having been uprooted from a rural backwater in north Yorkshire and abruptly moved to an alien place on the other side of the planet.
Plus, I’ve since lived in various cities all over Canada and so have experienced first hand the feeling of being L’Étranger many times over.
