Obviously, the woman was extremely disturbed. Any rational person wouldn't have done this. I fear that something like this is going to take place at our plant because there is a very mentally disturbed individual who works on Tour 1. Has made threatening remarks to different individuals and even followed people after they got off work, but, the Postal Service seems to think that this is "normal"?!?! And they wonder why after it happens?

Intersting that they think someone who threatens and follows is 'normal' but did not peg this woman shooter as dangerous to others -- how perceptive they are.

It is a sad situation all around. It is sad that a human is left with no other option than to take a life for relief. The Postal Service hostile work environment contribute to it . Employees are harassed and the USPS gives lip service to policy enforcement. The Postal managers protect each other right or wrong. Would you desire your daughter to be sexual harassed without recourse? Employees need their job but at what price must they pay to keep it? As a result of the hostile work environment that exist at the USPS many employees are walking around on medically prescribed "PROZAC" to help them remain calm. Employees complain to higher managers, EEOC, Postal Inspectors, Inspector General, Labor Relation, Labor Union, and anyone that will listen if they feel it will help to no avail. No one seem to want to deal with the problems that exist within the Postal Service, so what are the choices. Don't judge the female employee harshly because you don't know what she had to endure. PEACE

When is the Postal Service going to tighten-up security? Why doesn't every postal facility have an armed guard on duty? Too expensive? How expensive is it for the families of these victims?
When is America going to get serious about gun control, so that guns are kept out of the hands of mentally-ill people? If we have to register our cars, why doesn't every gun owner have to register their guns? Do you think maybe we have a problem with too many guns in America, or is everything just fine the way it is because guns don't kill people?

No comment on this woman's race? She wanted to start a paper called "The Racist Press". I have to wonder why this detail is left out - perhaps over fear of shattering stereotypes: not the angry white guy this time, but perhaps the angry minority female?
Postal Service has to face the music: why doesn't this happen at Fedex or UPS?
Are there too many inept but protected losers in the management at USPS?

how can we prevent this from happening again?
if a lone mental patient can get through all the security checkpoints of a postal plant then that is the saddest truth of all. it could have been prevented.
how can we prevent foreign terrorists from entering postal facilities?
i am certain that other govt agencies have much better security measures in place. what about the pentagon, congress, the white house, or military installations?
nobody in govt really cares about postal workers. remember the anthrax deaths? the capitol was immediately evacuated, tested, and cleansed. in contrast, the postal plant workers were told to keep working; and some died because of this.
postal workers are the red-headed stepchildren of the federal govt.

How come thousands and thousands of layed off airline workers did not come back and even the score.
No shootings by the Enron employees who in some cases lost a million dollar pensions.
No shootings at Ford or GM since they announced 30,000 lay offs.
Only at the Post Office overstaffed with thousands of uneducated mismanaging bureaucrats that want to screw any worker they can for bonus cash.
Time to call the office of your Congress person and your two elected Senators and tell them to pull the plug on this bonus scam. Just pay the bums a yearly salary-and nothing more.

Some of us like our jobs, like our office, and think it is a pretty nice organization to work for. It beats, Walmart, a steel mill, or a coal mine! It seems like no one is watching the news or reading the articles all the way through. This woman had not work for the post office for the last 3 years. She has been collecting monthly disability checks since she left the post office. She has been living in NM for the last year and working there prior to being fired from her job. How can people still blame the post office for her actions that had nothing to do with her working at the post office. Could it be she was just an unstable person and just lost it and it really didn't have anything to do with the post office? According to another article, she might have killed her neighbor at the same time she came to the post office. There are times people need to stop blaming everyone else for their own actions.

I'm a former now retired dockworker and I used to belong to the Longshoreman's Union. Give credit where credit is due I always say however after reading the illiterate postings on this site one would tend to think that Post Office management was also to blame for this nut case shooting her neighbor? She had not worked at the PO for 3 years! How exactly is PO management responsible for that? Her own fellow co-workers were in fear of her and demanded PO management do something about her and they did! Now you gonna blame them for this?
She was a nut case in Albuquerque NM nothing having to do with the PO - are they responsible for this nut's actions in NM for other employers?
Its all fine to take an anti-management stance however when you do at least have the decency to post something with logical development of ideas and rationale thinking- not the mindless rhetoric and panderings of typical low IQ postal hires that you are! And you wonder why the "civilian" population hates your guts so! Just read your own pathetic postings and get a life! Don't look now but your intellect (or lack thereof) is showing!
I say sell the whole bunch of you to the private sector!

postal inspectors are not only useless for craft employees - they are harmful. they follow us and spy on us for management.
they don't help us at all. they only do what management tells them to do: damage control!
i was assaulted by a sup because i refused to sign a LOW [fabricated charges]and return the copy. i reported it to the local police and postal police.
but did the postal inspectors interview me during their investigation? NO! but of course they interviewed the sup. the sup lied of course and then charged me with fabricating the incident and thereby creating a hostile work environment for her!

Everyone she came in contact with felt special, she just had the impact on everyone. I shead many tears today for Jim, the boys, her family and friends. Does anyone else know this woman? Very eerie to me personally as days before the incident I did a search on her out of curiousity!

It's simply amazing to me that people can find this moment to criticize mgmt. This wacked out White lunatic had been soaking down disability checks from the Post Office for almost 3 years. This Bitch was just plain crazy and racist and she took this opportunity to spew out hatred. She had no life and was determined to destroy the lives of others. I don't believe she had a problem w/ mgmt., if so . .. why didn't she seek out one to shoot. She came after regular clerks on the floor. Her own family members are ashamed to claim her. Why haven't we seen family on tv supporting her. My condolences to all of the families who are suffering at this time. Id reather mail my donations in to support the families . . rather that listen to disgruntled workers. Amazed - I'm amazed at a sane message being found here. What is even more amazing is all these educated people allowing themselves to remain in a job they hate so much. The only reason that can be dceduced is they make more at the po than in positions they have all these degrees for. Congress must be thinking, if they hate the PO and remain in a position that requires only the ability to read on a 3rd grade level, surely these positions are way overpaid and they wasted time and money on an education. Maybe the states should look at cutting back on higher education as so much is wasted on those without the ability to use an education.

condolences for the familes and friends of the deceased. this obviously was not the action of a stable person.
but USPS deliberately creates a hostile work environment...sometimes for all, sometimes for a few. but they never give up. when you take a person who is a bit "bent", or "on the edge", and subject them to years of harassment and unwarranted scrutiny (The Postal Way), these "bent" people can easily "break" and go off the deep edge into the Dark Side.
there is nothing inherently inferior about Postal employees. they are usually normal people, on average, like everyone else. what DOES matter is that they are forced to work in very UN-normal workplaces a lot of the time. USPS believes in abusing its workforce. this stuff happens as a direct result, whether you want to believe that or not.

We didn't realize we would be working like we were in jail or the military when we joined the USPS- staffed by uneducated, power mad, psychotics- the ones who aren't are afraid of the ones who are. Management is full of bullies and psychos- with a very few who try to stay like they were before they went into management. Eventually they either go back to the craft or morph into one of the others.I spoke to one who finally quit. It is easy to speculate that because she was in the system ie. being removed, disability retirement, etc- she had much contact with management as far as disciplinary action, investigative interviews, etc. that this was related to the PO. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Her fellow workers were obviously scared of her. The PO is notorious for its hostile work environment. It only exposes what's there even if in this one instance it didn't factor in totally; it still factored in.
Being a Union Rep, I have been involved in alot of incidents first hand where managers double teamed an employee in the sight of all fellow employees who were too scared to be witnesses knowing that they would be next. Most employees just look the other way and do not want to get involved. They know from seeing others who do get involved that they become the next one to be targeted . They would tell me what they saw but refuse to write a statement therefore we have no evidence except one persons word against two managers. Only when it happened to me, I made sure to state loudly enough for all to hear" Why are you harassing me because I talked to someone after I clocked out". I made sure I had witnesses who would write a statement. Only another Union Rep would do it. We are not easily intimidated or we wouldn't do the job. You all might say that Union Reps are like a clique, but most of the other employees are too afraid to get involved. A Union Rep, at least the ones I know, will witness and write a statement.
People, stop being intimidated! Stand up for your rights! If all of us who were harassed would stand together and make statements for eachother, they wouldn't depend upon their intimidation tactics to keep getting away with it. Those of you who have a good relatiobship with management are the ones who work off the clock, skip lunch and breaks, do work at home( one of the rehab carriers at my office makes the color coded charts for management on her own time as well as making an updated phone list).
It is suppose to be an atmosphere of mutual respect. ELM666. When the supervisor took me into her office to state" I don't like the way you are talking to me" I said" I am just talking to you the same way you talk to me. I am not a dog- sit, stay, rollover, so don't talk to me like one". Of course, she acted like I was exaggerating. They call it
" supervising" when they stand with their head over your shoulder staring at you while you work. It is harassment plain and simple.
Demand respect! Call them on it when they talk to you like a dog. I treat my dogs like my kids, but you know what I mean. We are not just "bodies" as they call us. We are people with rights.
Instead of all of the infighting between the crafts we should be sticking up for eachother. They rely on us bickering about eachother. They are usually the ones who start the rumors which get it going.
I am a college graduate who only began working for the PO when my daughter was molested by a teacher when I was in college. The PO job helped me provide for my 3 children as a single Mom. I became a Union rep because I needed some latitude in the job. I just couldn't stand by and watch. How can you guys just complain and not do something?
