thank you, thank you. I loved the knitwear in the movie, I couldn't take my eyes off of all of it. And Lyra's hat, well, it was the best. I'm very excited to knit this up for myself. And my daughter. And knowing my son, he'll need one too.

The internets are amazing. On a very hot Australian summer day while watching the 'Golden Compass' (slightly jealous of all that snow) thinking how much I loved Lyra's hat and wondering if anyone had come up with a pattern for it, and hey presto.
Thanks a bunch!How fantastic!

Thanks to the gals over at Modern Yarn (Located in Montclair, NJ.) I was told about your posting and finally knitted my very own Golden Compass hat! Thank you SO much for posting the patern. The moment I saw the film, I said to myself, "I have got to knit that hat!"

Thank you! I learned 3 needle bind off because of you, and sheesh! I wish I had known about that before. What a wonderful seam avoider.
I used your pattern as inspiration, but sized it down for my daughter, who's 7 months old. I've put it up on Ravelry (I'm Ronica) if you want to take a look. It's adorable. I also love the ties--thanks for teaching me that, too!
Here's a link to a photo on my flickr.

Love that hat, I laos am jealous of your cute girl model and the head model too. I wish I had both of those to model my stuff.
It's mighty cold in NY today and even inside my house, perhaps I'll make a hat right away to wear while I knit and crochet. LOL

I've had this pattern bookmarked for a long time, after I saw it on craftzine (I think that's where I saw it...). And as I was about to crochet a hat for my doll, I found this bookmark again. I love it! I can't wait to make one for my head :P (The pic is in my homepage link)
Thanks so much!

I made one yesterday for my daughter, complete with ridiculously huge pompon. She HATED it. I loved it, and so did one of the neighborhood children. It was so quick and easy to make, but I suck @ 3N BO so I used a crochet hook. Planning on making several more for raffle prizes ... is it OK to sell them if proceeds go to charity?
Thanks,

Hi could you (I know it's asking a lot) come up with the same hat using 2 strands of worsted? I can handle 2 strands held together but my hands are very nearly 49 this year and can't hold that much yarn ongoing.
I hope you consider this I love golden compass in fact I own it and the hat is lovely!

Looks warm, comfy & snuggly. It is also very old fashioned looking like something I saw my mom & aunt wearing in photos of them when children in the 1940s. I think I will try making one or two or maybe more as I can think of a few folks who would like them for their little ones. Thanks.

Nice job! I don't know how to knit but was going to ask my mom if she could make this. Only thing I'd change is the frame around the face. It bulges quite a bit more than the one Lyra wore-hers is just slightly raised, not a big ridge. Could that be remedied by using less strands for just that part?

I am a beginner kitter. Is it possible for me to make this or does it look easier than it is. I know what most of your knitting pattern said. but i don't know what it means to cast on using the cable method, and also is working from both ends of the same ball of yarn mean, hold the beginning and end of the yarn of the same ball and knit holding onto the two of them as if you were knitting with one strand of yarn? Does that make sense? Sorry..lol. maybe you could dumb the pattern down for me a bit. I would love to make some of these for my darlings.
Thank you,
Charmaine

I really like this hat. I am wondering if it could be crochet of knitted on a round loom (knifty knitter) as a flat piece since I do not knit. If the piece is made into a rectangle and then stitched up the back as it appears to be it should work. thanks
