Do you guys realize how big a deal it was for NBC to be that in your face with their profile of him as "flamer"- that is why we gave him props for telling people to "eat it"- we know he meant cobag. Now when all the gay guys start playing patriarchy and crap on him because yeah, when the entertainment industry shows gays they are all like Jack on Will and GRace, but in this case they showed a REAL person during the Olympics, not just during GAY TIME. (well, it is men's figure skating, so there you go). BUT, I was prepared to hate him too for being annoying...until he a) told people to "eat it" probably because they want him to hide his gay and b) he actually nailed his performance like Digby.

I'm with Pinko on this one. If it's okay to be gay only insofar as you conform to heterosexist gender ideals, then patriarchy pretty much remains undisturbed. True liberation means that there's room for the queenie boys too. Also, when I was his age, there's no way that someone like him would have been on national TV...or on the US olympic team. I disagree, I think he not only mocked himself, but NBC mocked gay culture. If NBC had really cared, maybe they wouldn't be like the Brokeback Mountain wimps and hide it, but not really, but really. Do more than show him driving around town not saying it, but saying it. Put together a piece on what is was like to be gay and destined for Olympic Gold. Thereby giving the kids out there who are still in the closet something real and tangible. Not Hollywood diamonds and pearls.
All I am suggesting here is let's show real people, not glitter boi bitches. If he showed his true self, fine. However, driving around in his Escalade talking about being a Diva for TV is not real. I mean, they had Weir posed like Truman Capote-on-a-settee in the opening shots of that Profile (Very Up Close and Just Not Too Personal, this time), and it is fucking Men's Figure Skating. And the guy is in medal contention, so they'll be playing it again. I haven't paid any attention to skating since, probably, the last Olympics, so I don't know who any of these kids is. Still, a profile like that is a long way from the dear old days of deep-closeted coding.
I'd be hard pressed at this point in my life to go the kweeny route - that would be a sad, sad travesty, I assure you - but I'm not going to wince if Johnny stands up there and makes it work for himself. Teh Gay should be available in all flavors.

I think my main complaint isn't so much that he was fem or flamy, but rather that for as much as he kept saying that he wasn't a diva, he sure did come across as one. And it's okay to be a diva, but don't try to pretend that you're not.
