Comment on Post at Effect Measure

I wish they would close the live poultry markets in New York and New Jersey, for starters.

It might help the WHO raise funds if they had a PLAN OF ACTION on how they would spend it. It might help the WHO raise funds if they were TRANSPARENT and TRUTHFUL.

How are we going to eliminate the virus, since it is in the wild, migrating bird population??? Impossible.

It is TOO LATE for any amount of money to eliminate the virus. ALL money should be going toward large and fast vaccine production capabilities.

Gravatar Earl: I agree with you about the planning aspect and this issue, as I noted in an earlier post, is complicated by other agendas regarding how to develop the poultry industry (industrial farming or not). But the amount of money here is so tiny in comparison to the payoff that it seems reasonable to pursue several avenues at once, including vaccines and a hard look at the poultry industry in toto.

Overall I agree there is no hope of containing this, but regionally it can be mitigated and slowed which might make a big difference in how much effective preparation can get done and also have payoffs in the future for this and other zoonotic diseases.

My concerns are a bit different than yours. I worry that this crisis will lead to precipitous policy decisions that will have bad effects down the line (e.g., result in more concentration in large facilities).

Gravatar Does WHO have a plan of action? I think that if foreign nations are going to donate money it is reasonable for them to request a rough budget for how those funds will be layed out.

I do find it odd that after years of neglect we're suddenly increasing funding against Malaria in Africa, with what sounds like more than twice the money Asia is requesting, to combat a regional threat in Africa that is essentially no threat to the US, while ignoring a regional threat in Asia that is (H5N1).

If I could draw a humorous comparison to our invasion of Iraq, which had no weapons of mass distruction, to our non-invasion of N. Korea, which does have weapons of mass destruction, I would. But I just can't seem to find any humor here, even though my sense of humor is pretty dark to begin with.

Gravatar Does anyone know what 'drug' this snip refers to? Could this be the elusive Tamiflu knock-off that Roche claims does not exist in China? Do they mean the Amantadine they've used against international agreement? Or are they referring to the poultry vaccine which China has claimed to be using? Or do they have a drug that we dont? If so, what is it called and what is its proposed mechanism of action?

Or is this just China pulling the old Soviet PR trick of "we invented everything"?

Gravatar Lisa: I don't have the foggiest idea what this refers to. I would say it is the vaccine but it refers to "killing the virus". I'd take it with a grain of salt at the moment. WHO has been there and we would have heard of an actual antiviral.

Gravatar I would have used a slightly different term than "chicken feed."

Feeling the frustration..

Gravatar Wyeth vaccine plant is for sale----up and running in one year at a cost of---coincidentally---$100 million for renovations.

Just wondering how long and how much it would take to build a vaccine plant from scratch???

It is time for the world to get
realistic about a flu pandemic's potential. American insurance and credit card companies would do well to get this Wyeth plant up and running! BIG payback.

Gravatar you suggest $1770 per day is spent on bird flu in Asia?!

Gravatar roelmeijer: you are correct. I have issued a correction to the post.
