Drilling may seem like a good idea to reduce dependency, however it will realistically change little. The price of oil has little to do with Supply/Demand. The USA is actually very clever in not drilling on its own soil. Currently, the USA has more than enough money to buy oil from other countries. It is strategically better to use up all foreign oil first, then drill. For starters, prices will be higher, but more importantly the USA will have a large supply of oil which can be withheld to undesirable countries, as well as keep the military fueled. The Soviet Union did that in its time, and now look at Russia.
