I'm confused. For 364 days a year the orthodox mantra is 'save the planet' to which I always ask, which planet? But today I'm told its 'Earth Day'. Shouldn't it be 'Planet Day'? Sooo, I do many of the things (& more) suggested in this post because its just common sense & good stewardship except the CFL light bulb thing. If one of those breaks in my house, then I have to worry about saving my family on the spot! Well at least the mercury once its cleaned up by poison control will somehow be put back in the environment from whence it came...
