i wouldn't delete any photos, esp. ifthey are in raw format. that step should be changed to something more along of the lines of "find the good shots and make a copy of them to a different folder where they can be imported and edited in a photoshop like app." i would also suggest something like an iViewmedia pro, which is like iphoto, but better.

After importing the images to the computer, I would add a 'Backup imported images', in case you delete any pictures you may have wanted! This way, you at least keep every RAW image taken, before you process them in case you need to go back.
The way I do it is to have a 'Photo Inbox', with dated folders, within which I import the images. I then back these up to DVDR, and then do all the deleting, processing, etc.

I would immediately add a step for Backup right after import. I would then add a step for rename photos (preferably to a composite of Date/Time of picture and the filename). Then add a step for cataloging your images and adding details. Archive the images you want to delete separately from the rest of your archive. Lastly, archive your photo library and catalog before deciding what to do with the image.
