I was 11 years old when World War II was ended. I remember the war years. I had four uncles that served in WWII. Dale was in Patten's 3rd Army. Cecil made a career our of military service in Intelligence. Carlan spent his war years in Peru in the Air Force. Gary was the youngest of the four uncles and is the only one left here. He is 83 years old now and spent his military time in the Pacific just behind the front lines. Was in the Signal Corp working with "messages". I have met a lot of veterans of that war including your father-in-law and they are a different breed. They did their duty when it was presented to them and didn't complain. About 500,000 died and millions were injured during the conflict but those who survived didn't complain but went on with their lives. Memories are still there and many never shared those memories with their families. They saw things and experienced things that are hard for us to understand but still they did what they needed to do. I'm proud of our veterans and of our country. Many today will not say that because they weren't here when it happened. It's one of those "you had to be there" moments. Thanks for sharing. |
