You go ahead and take the dive. If she's too much of a pussy to bite and see if the shoe fits, then that's her problem and if she's smart and nice she will still try to be friends. What I find interesting is you still like the same type of girl you did at 16. Is this common? A few months ago I found a letter I wrote when I was 16 about what type of girl I wanted and if I ran into her today I would pat her on the back and tell her she's trying too hard.
