It's a classic.
The rich, handsome, generous stranger. The beautiful, noble woman trapped in a tragic marriage.
Heaps of agape, a dash of eros.
Virtue triumphs, and the man, having known such love, can never know a lesser love.
There's just one little verisimilitude issue.
All men are pigs.

I'm all about agape and eros!
Of course men are pigs. That is why this is fiction, a fairytale really.....
What can I say? I was in a mood.

The story seems very sad to me. Staying together "for the kids" isn't always as good for the kids as people think. Having a few good years, and then the rest of your life in a lukewarm relationship? It hurts to think about it.
Mcgehee, I can't contact you any other way since I see no email for you on your blog, and your comments thing is broken. I put one there last night, and now it's gone. Now I can't put any comment in there at all!

Great story- did you really write that? It was exquisitely written- how long did it take you to finish it?
Good job.

Did I really write it???????!!!
Of course I did! I wrote it in about 1 hour last night. I write short stories as a creative outlet.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice story I suppose.

Good, thought provoking story.
Coming from my straight male's perspective, I wasn't buying the gay thing for a second. And the idea that this guy waited over 2 years to make a move, without any strange on the side is pure fantasy. Granted, there are good guys out there who, if they are truly in love, will wait patiently and do anything to win their true loves' hearts. Your hero is going after a married woman. Scratch this predator from the good guy list.
Remember, all men are pigs. We are simple and easy. Beer, food, sex, sleep - the four basics of the man group pyramid. Which one is on top is determined by how long it's been since we last had it.
The thing I really like the most about your story RWS is the perfectly clear window you provide to a true woman's soul. I never tire of seeing and strolling down that most wonderful path.
Maybe if her husband had this reminder, this picture of what he had probably done to win her heart in the first place, he could win her heart and she might learn to love him again.
And if men took this lesson to heart, they would most likely get all they want out of the relationship and more.
Thank you for sharing. I look forward to more

Compos, but that's the thing. He didn't go after her. He let her go. He WAS a good guy.
I like the beer/food/sex/sleep quote. I'll remember it. Truer words were never written.

Truer words were never written. Sad isn't it?
Men are capable of tremendous passion and great love. Which raises a question - Why do you think the husband became angry and abusive?
And okay, *rolls eyes*, I'll give you that your hero turned out to be a good guy because he made the ultimate sacrifice and let his one true love go so she could do the right thing. But I have a better chance of seeing William Shattner beamed into my office with monkeys flying out of his butt than your hero suddenly finding a conscience :P

It doesn't surprise me that it was Erik the Lib who didn't think she should stay with her husband. The liberal drumbeat of "do whatever makes YOU happy, no matter the cost to others" has been going around since the 60s. And it's the attitude that has been tearing apart the fabric of our society for years now. Look around at the consequences of that attitude.
Personal sacrifice is just not in a liberal's vocabulary. Why NOT do it just for the children? What better reason could their be?

And let's not forget something. That in reality if she had left and married Steve not only would it have damaged the children for life but Steve would probably end up being a workaholic and not paying enough attention to her and then they would have fought ect. ect...
That's life and there really is no Prince Charming or Sleeping Beauty.

RWS,
I think you've got the market cornered on right-wing-romance. Only the guy libertarians want exploding space aliens after eating pizza; although that would have made the story better.
Onward, CarlosinCA
P.S. Actually your story was charming. Quite well written.

I agree with dave, although don't forget that exploding aliens are nice, but disintigrating aliens who speak english work well in any occasion.
