Really, Jill, you can't waste your time arguing with jandrew - I'm sorry, Jill's Golden Eagle - if he doesn't know how to argue. George Washington is definitely relevant to the situation in France.
Recently I met a guy from Italy doing a semester of postgrad at UC Berkeley. He was intelligent, educated, & articulate & of course against the Iraq War. He considered himself very well informed, but when I discussed the war, it was clear all he had to offer were bromides about being 'against war,' 'unilateralism,' etc.
He was completely incapable of discussing this particular war in any meaningful terms, & when I had him on the ropes, he said, "Well, you better go back & read about how the US invented militant Islam."
That's called an evasion, but you can't argue with such people. (And confirms my suspicions about all those sophisticated Europeans marching 'against war' - they have no idea why they're out there.)
Ah, yes, the old "give 'em the brush off because blah blah blah they don't know how to argue/the rules/what they're talking about etc." routine - a real right wing favorite. Now that's some evasion...

I could also point to people on the right who get into conversations about things they are sadly uninformed and underinformed about, but I don't attribute those people's flaws to every person on the right.
This is the type of strawman argument (or anecdotal man argument) that leads to further dvisiveness among Americans. Am I expected to jump to the defense of some Italian exchange student at Berkely simply because he claimed to oppose a war that I think was necessary for American interests simply becuase you mentioned him and he disagreed with you?
I am more than willing to have a meaningful and informed discussion with you if you would like, but you can't even seem to get the fact that I am only one person straight. I don't speak for the "left" and the "left" doesn't speak for me any more than the fictional entity referred to as "the right" is able to espouse your "independent" beliefs.

Seriously, France might be a short train ride from where I sit but culturally it is on Pluto. Even India makes more sense than France does.
When they premiered la Haine (a film about this EXACT situation with less Muslims made YEARS ago) the riot Police marched in and stood with their backs to the screen NOT WATCHING IT.

Would that they bring everyone in top security at Belmarsh in front of a judge every 7 days.
I am neither for 90 days nor against the Police. I just cannot believe that the Tories actually decided to choose the "Terror" issue to make sure Blair was defeated.
All it says to "the masses" is that the Conservatives hate Blair more than they are interested in our security. No one will believe they did it for reasons of "civil liberties"
