Bush stood up for them but I still couldn't blame them for holding a grudge against Congress. The problem could have been solved with an American-based wholly owned subsidiary of DFW running the terminals if Congress hadn't panicked.

I'm amazed at all this and it is sadly pathetic.
Who do they think DP will employ? Arabs? Nope, Americans - thats who. And do you think for one minute that if anything un-toward was going on that it wouldn't be reported? Do people not even trust American workers?
They still have to pay taxes etc - it's simply another company running another contract.

Halliburton is the only company capable of handling such a contract at the present time.
The government can either keep saying that for the next 40 years, or can sieze this or any of the thousands of opportunities that appear every day to "encourage" the UAE to either spin off a portion of their newly acquired assets (including personel and contracts) no a entity which would have a spectacular IPO (based purely on public sentiment, I don't think the business model is that great) and create a company that could compete with Halliburton and possibly lead to some of those efficiencies created by competition I read about in my economics textbooks.
Or they could just give it to Niel Bush. I think that would be the most ironic move of the century. He's worked in security firms, he's had executive experience, he's hated by those on the left who know him more than both of his brothers combined. Hell I'd vote for Jeb if they just handed the ports deal to Niel.

Congress served the will of the people. They did their job in honestly represeting the views of the majority of their constituents. It's a sad commentary on the American People, but I'm actually a little impressed with Congress, this must be an election year.

Bush doesn't look like a wimp that caved
our Middle Eastern friends can't be mad at Bush on the matter since he stood up for them.
First off, this issue wasn't about Bush it was about free trade, which may suffer because of this.
But I agree that Bush does not look like a wimp that caved, he looks like a completely lame duck.
Foriegn leaders are going to hit him with "did you check with your congress on this." I look for a quote similar to that from Russian leaders in the next few days. Bush's international credibility took a severe blow on this one.

Since I have generally caved in to this BS, let me say that this issue as much BS as there is. I can't stand the sound of George Bush's name but this is a BS issue. Of all the things you wimps have to be "scared of" this is the least. It's just moving freight for C's sake. Why don't you fools from Houston take time out from from discriminating against refugees from New Orleans and go down to the port and see what is actually going on.

The controversy spilled over into a separate congressional debate on lobbying reform. Frist suspended that debate after the chamber refused to prevent a vote on blocking the takeover.
The Republicans couldn't come up with the 67 votes needed to prevent the Senate from considering an amendment to the lobbying legislation.
After the vote, Frist, a Tennessee Republican, said he would delay action on the lobbying and ethics legislation until the Senate sponsors approved a list of amendments and blocked unrelated proposals. He gave no date for resuming debate, and Schumer, the sponsor of the ports amendment, said he still wanted a vote on that issue.
``We've had a totally unrelated amendment injected, I believe, for partisan purposes,'' Frist said.
So Frist tried to kill Schumer's Ammendment, and lost another cloture vote (quite badly). I'm sure Schumer was "almost in tears" about that.

Are you reading contracts or something?
I said this: "a Rep congressman found a way to put the brakes on it", meaning Rep Jerry Lewis (I thought that was funny too), R-California, Chairman of the appropriations commitee, attached a rider to a war funding bill and killed the port/terminal deal. No way Bush could veto that.
Then I said Schumer and Reid looked like they'd been kicked in the nards when they were on TV that evening. The Rs took this issue away from the Ds, and they don't look too happy about it.

"The Republican Congress gets to look like it stood strong?"
No, it get to look stupid, bigoted, and not having a clue about how business works. And if it's only going for "looks," then it needs to be replaced.
In fact, her stand on the Dubai Ports deal just cost my Republican representative my vote come elections time. I want my representative to be smarter than than, and to not dive to the bottom for a populist vote.
