OK Europe is big. Lots of different people, lots of different ideas. Al Qaeda in Iraq are small.
Now if it wasn't for the situation in Northern Ireland I would imagine the IRA, who were also small, wouldn't exist.
Now whether we are honest about it or not, opportunities for an Islamic state have been crushed, violently by people who torture at will with western backing since, well way back.
I think that goes some way to explaining why small groups are vicious as mad dogs, without justifying them at all.

They banned interracial dating for about an extra 40 years after everyone else. That's nutty enough. They have also been very anti-Catholic in their teachings, which I figured you would have heard about! I can find examples if needed. Then there are their "interesting" science courses that teach a "Christian philosophy of science". In other words science based more on belief than actual evidence, which isn't science at all. They didn't allow a 60 year old alum that was gay to visit the school (he wasn't visiting to protest). Anyway, this is all beside the point! I just think the writer of the article trying to equate Islamists with Berkeley activists was two silly things to try and draw a line between and seems to tip to his bias, though I know you said you thought he was a Dem and/or a liberal.

Well, Bob Jones U is a private institution (right down the road from me, as a matter of fact), and believe me, I agree that they have a healthy heaping helping of nutty on their plates, but it's their right to teach whatever they want at their school. However, I have yet to see them bringing their nuttiness to bear against legitimate government or community organizations or agencies in Greenville that they disagree with. That would mark their extreme difference with, and point of departure from, the uhmmm, for lack of a better word..."ladies" of Code Pink.
