And so wasn't Lincoln but for the last 40 years tje Republican Party has not been seen by Blacks to be a party that cares for or wants their votes.

I can't help but note, John Ryan, that 40 years coincides with the rise of the welfare state and dependence on gov't dole.

Makes sense. Why would MLK support a party who discriminated against his race for a 100yrs.

Lincoln was a progressive, and so were the Republicans when he belonged to the party. The Republicans "fired" Lincoln during his first term (which the party never mentions when they claim him as their own), and he ran on the National Union Party ticket in 1864. The Republicans then moved towards a conservative political philosophy (and boy, do I wish they would do that again) while the Democrats moved towards a liberal political philosophy.
Interesting about MLK, though. Not surprising if you think about the way Southern Democrats were back then, but interesting.
