When I was in FL recently, there was a program about Croydon on TV.
In the Doomsday book, it was called Croindene. There have been several versions, but I like this one. It means 'man's skin' in Welsh. It is known that the Welsh (OK, the Celts) lived in that area until the Romans came, who pushed them North and West to what became Leeds and Wales.
