Last week's minister for education is this week's minister for defence. Best person for the job, and all that.

And here we go again. People with absolutely no idea what internet traffic actually is coming up with plans that ultimately cannot work in the real world.

So, they identify \"bad sites\" and what? Block them? China-style censorship? The sites will rename and/or mirror. Heuristic analysis of IP packets to detect possible naughty traffic? Just re-encode and decode the data at source and destination and change the traffic signature. Unlike a virus which ultimately has to be executable at some stage and has limited (albeit high) signatures that can be analysed for threats, data has infinite methods of coding possible. It can always evolve, staying ahead of the ISPs - as they well know - making it a waste of time, effort, and money. They won't want to do this because of the pointlessness.

Perhaps we should insist that politicians become appropriately certified before they can take any role in government?

What angers me about this sort of thing is that it'll be the 'little' people they go after (as has happened already). One person will get caught downloading one illegal file and prosecuted while the really big offenders get away scott-free.
