Yes I agree, there is really no need at all to swear to make folks laugh in fact it completely puts me off when a comedian does it.
I love upright bass.
As for swearing, depends on the context for me, really. That, and I've been working really hard to clean up my own swearing so it'd be like the pot calling the kettle black. 
Saw Jim Tavare on Last Comic Standing last year. He was terrific, but judging by this clip, was not used nearly up to his potential...

Agree with technogran.
But this guy is 'mildly' funny. Kind of puerile though. Obviously copied his basic act from Victor Borge - who was so brilliant. But I appreciate the lack of profanities. Maybe as Debi said, he was not used to his potential.
Watched Mrs. Slocombe a couple of days back. Now there's comedy!
