I'll be interested to hear how you find Deanna Ward's book. I have picked it up many times & put it back....
I do have Donalda Dickie & we've been using it already. I started incorporating it into SOTW 2, when the voyages of exploration come up. We dropped off of SOTW & did voyages & discovery & maps. It was fun. I plan to keep up with that and when they're older, we'll watch "Canada: A People's History" and read some Pierre Burton books.
I've been gathering up the Pierre Berton books from his kids' series at garage sales and the Goodwill -- my daughter likes them because "they're not too long, you know" lol. Yet another good thing, out of print. Argh. And if they're good I might read some of his adult stuff aloud to them : )
I watched some of the CBC series when it was on but it seemed rather darkly lit and slow-moving. The library has the whole series, so maybe I can fast forward if necessary!
Found your site recently & enjoyed it though I'm now a former homeschool mum. Started a blog partly to fill time as I actually miss going over books, etc. for unit studies & so on. I used Donna Ward's Courage/Conquest when she just had a prototype version, liked it pretty well. For a bit of humour as well as history, Unusual Heroes is a good profile of various Canadians, forget the author. I'm still figuring out some aspects of the blogging, like how to get comments option going, it's fun at times. Good luck with the homeschool.
Like your site, as a former homeschool mum I miss some of the fun of finding good books for unit studies, etc. I used Courage/Conquest when it was in prototype form, found it useful.Good luck with your year.
