That book looks like such a treat. I think we'll get it. Thanks for blogging about it. I missed the ref to it in The Economist.....

I missed the Economist blurb too! But then again, the last issue I picked up was the Africa issue. I love to pour through their LONG articles (argh, that is when I'm not on the computer...).

We used OIS during the middle ages, and last year with the early moderns. I printed it off Baldwin - but would love to have a true, bound copy:)

There is yet another SOTW styled history book (for the less secular crowd). I think I posted it on WTM - but you might find it interesting. It's on the Baldwin Project as well:

Now, I'm still poking around your past posts and sidebar. What is a cattle baron? I'm conjouring up weird thoughts of cowboy styled serfdoms on an open range.

I'm not sure if the link will work because they change the main page. The author is M. B. Synge. The books are written for the grammar stage crowd.

I'm letting you down here, Becky! I've certainly come across Civitas on an intermittent basis, but couldn't really give them a reference.

Also, have tried to track down my father (first degree: history), to find out whether he knows the book but can't find him right now. Somewhere in Paris, I think.

Book looks a good one though and will also be following it up.

Concierge -- I handled The Economist best in my previous life when long Metro/subway rides to work were involved. Now it's catch as catch can.
A cattle baron is a rancher who owns v-a-s-t amounts of cattle; think thousands, compared to the two hundred max we've ever owned. Davy has been greatly influenced by our collection of old westerns on video lol. I've seen the Synge books here,

I'm also tempted by the Famous People/Stories books by James Baldwin. So many books, so few bookshelves!

Carlotta -- I for one am relieved. At least you weren't immediately familiar with the name because they're a bunch of arch-conservative dolts and witlings. Hope your father is enjoying his time in Paris!
