Okay, here's a question. When folks talk about math or science resources they often mention those parents who lack confidence in the subject (especially at higher levels). Any of those kind of comments for using these resources?
I recognize a lack of knowledge myself due to not being taught enough about art as a child, I guess. It makes it difficult for me to really appreciate art galleries and even architecture (all those cathedrals in Europe bore me though when I went to Cologne with a friend who knew stuff and explained the architecture, I loved it).
We went to the Renaissance exhibition at the national gallery and the kid and I got the tape things. that was great. For both of us. We got a lot out of it. I suppose we should do that more often. But which of those resources do you think is a good 'learning together' one?

JoVE,
That's what's so nice about the ones that are narrative and chronological. You can read them just like a storybook, and follow the timeline. That said, however, Merlo's "History of Art" is quite nice because of the drawings of how Stonehenge was built and a giant statue of Buddha erected -- all the nuts and bolts of the "how did they do it", which is nice for kids who are always interested in that aspect and also if you need to avoid the "eyes glazing over" aspect of looking at page after page of reproductions (which in this book are drawings and not photographs).
Do you have a good library in Ottawa, or failing that a decent interlibrary loan system? Because probably the best thing to do would be to borrow as many books on the kids' list as you can, and see which you -- and your child -- prefer, based on writing style, layout, size and number of color plates, etc. Does that help at all, or have I just muddied the waters further?!

That's kind of helpful. Our public library is great. One of the advantages of city mergers (all of the burbs used to be their own city but they merged a few years ago) is a big library system with an easy system for getting stuff from other branches.
I think the biggest thing is just getting over my issues with art and doing some with her. Maybe we'll go back to the gallery. Heck, it's here. Might as well use it.

kind of helpful
Oh dear, lol.
JoVE, I emailed you privately with a few suggestions for Ottawa. I think you're right about going to the Gallery and have fun with the exhibits and the various programs they offer, especially for kids and teachers/students.

Another great list! Thanks Becky!
Sister Wendy's books and videos are the only ones we've used; they're great but I appreciate the other suggestions... Thanks again for such helpful posts!
