I love that excerpt from the Guardian review about the "magical definition" of history. Just wonderful. I am sold! I'm going to get both of the Gombrich volumes that you've written about.

And chicken books. Gotta love 'em, especially the ditzy Minerva Louise. We would love to have our own chickens, but we make do for now with pictures of our friends' flock on our fridge.


Becky, it's proper to see the old truths revived. A talk last by year by one well known UofTexas historian said much the same; for him, history remains a story. We moderns thus validate what Homer wrote (nice of us), Virgil, what was produced by the composers of the Arthur and Roland cycles; and so on. So Our civilization, for what it's worth, has agreed with theirs. That's good.
