Mary Lee, I've read lots of AG to the kids and I have to say that this is one of his few poems not really for kids. It's hard to appreciate when you haven't had a lot of years or responsibilities!
Some of the kids' favorites, not particularly humorous and more straight, are his poems of early American history, especially the one about the Oregon Trail. I'll see if I can find it, and then I'll put it up here.
