I officially LOVE home schooling families. Why do I have a P. H. D in English literature and not know about this book, which I am definitely buying?

Thank you!!

And no, I don't home school but hope there will be a year or two during my kids' education (public schools) when that endeavor makes sense for us. I love the idea but am afraid!

Because it probably wouldn't be included in a lit course. Not high literature, but an English children's classic for certain.

PS Mary, some of my best friends don't home school, tee hee. And most of the time I don't even write about hs'ing...

Swallows and Amazons (and the rest of the series) were an integral part of my childhood. I was fortunate to learn to sail at school - one of the benefits of growing up in a seaside town - and went on to enjoy some amazing voyages inspired by Ransome's work.

I sincerely hope the BBC pushes ahead and films the books as I firmly believe they instilled a spirit of adventure that is (sadly) lacking in children today. You can't blame the kids as this is more about a society which has made the world seem such an unsafe place and the parents who don't let them discover the world for themselves.

Children should be allowed to hoist the Jolly Roger and blow the consequences occasionally - hopefully this will inspire a few of them to do so!

I can't express how pleased I am that these classics are finally being adapted into movies. I know there was a version made in several decades past, but I would love to see a big-screen version of my favourite adventures. These were the models for my childhood. I have mentioned them to many of my friends, who inevitably respond with puzzled stares. At last, there is a renewal of interest in these books, the likes of which haven't been seen in years. I can't wait, and I dare to hope that all the child-actors will be as good as the characters deserve.
