The research has been done. Advocates of subsidizing autos have no case.

Actually, the real research is the fact that, given a choice and the economic means, very few people would choose to live without a car.
A car is THE way to economic freedom.
But I guess in the world of urban planning, it makes sense for a small city to pay over $700 per person per month to help 50 people take a bus to work.

So the answer is: stop subsidizing the car, and make the choice clear so that the balance economically isn't so lopsided away from transit. Eliminate free parking, raise gas prices, and center working class jobs (not just white collar) near transit and even better nearer to homes. Good REGIONAL planning needn't be car centric.

I think my last paragraph is pretty clear about the limited success of bus programs designed to move inner city or lower income people to suburban type places for jobs. The destinations are very diffuse, making it hard to provide efficient transport.
I don't think there is any nobility in being poor. I also think the issue is incredibly complex and nuanced, and generally, govt. and the private sector too, don't do incredibly complex and nuanced social type programs, including jobs programs, very well.

I for one am really glad to see Frederick's TransIT accept bikes.
We can put our bicycles on the front of the bus, which is a real life saver if it's threatening rain.
I can make it from Walmart on 355 to Jefferson and Patrick Street in less time than it takes for a car to make it to Market and All Saints.
The bus however is a blessing when it's raining.
I see the commenter's point though, I was not aware that it costs the local government $700 per person per month to run a bus?
Are you sure of those figures?
I have a CDL and still drive trucks occasionally, if the truck (bus)is paid for... and the driver doesn't beat the truck (bus) to death, the costs of running a truck aren't that high.
