Check out a great book on how the public funding of sports stadiums can lead to devastating effects, "Public Dollars, Private Stadiums" by Kevin Delaney. Sociologist at Temple University.

The "criminals" couldn't feast if the American public wasn't so braindead from being immersed 24/7 in being entertained by somebody else at places like the Verizon Center. Or watching TV or hanging online or being addicted to their Blackberry, computers, videogames, cellphones, etc. to look up and be outraged by our current situation.
I'm becoming more and more convinced that community in a place like DC is a myth.

Yes yes, because everyone knows that Japan and Korea (who are constantly bombarded with advertising and density -- and who love their gadgets and their baseball and pop-culture news) have absolutely NO community.
Jesus.
There is nothing inherent in distracting technologies that results in the devaluing of community.
If people are rude and distracted, we have no one to blame but ourselves for being jerks. The corrupt culture is just that. Ethics and morals live independently of tools. Culture evolves, of course, but if there is no core, new technologies will just amplify that. Don't look to create more victims.

You're the one defining my post through your own filters. That's not what I said.
