i think many of us would sign up for his baseline projection provided he stays healthy enough to get 450 PA's.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a healthy Matsui his his 65% projection
I think that's the problem. If he's healthy he'll hit. But health hasn't been one of his strong-suits the last few years. Hopefully he can stay healthy enough to get around 500PA, and the rest of the DH time can go to Swisher/Nady, or whoever needs a half-day off.
I've always liked Matsui. But I'd be happy to trade him. I'm not a big-fan (anymore anyway) of one-dimensional players, especially with an older team like the Yankees.
Curious, but how does Matsui's contract as a whole end up? I'd imagine not well, but not quite as bad as this year projects.

"But health hasn't been one of his strong-suits"
The ideal projection system would no doubt distinguish between freakish accidents and aging/fragility/wear-and-tear/etc.

I think correct use of punctuation is the height of prose...and I have no idea how to do it! So when in doubt, use a hyphen.

Well, the consensus is 480PA's, or about 120 games. Matsui has only averaged about 400 the last 3 years; two of those years ended with an injury and the other had one in the middle. I think the projection is a *little* optimistic; yup's 450 is probably closer. However, I also think he could easily have under 300.

how do we know his wrist injury wasn't a combination of both? part freak accident, part wear-and-tear from decades of collecting porn?

I don't think it's the collecting that's the issue at, er, hand.

Do hairy palms make for soft hands?
"and I have no idea how to do it"
But you do, modulo these flare-ups, which is why I poked you.

I'll take a look in a bit. Working on getting the site back up.

Yeah. I've seen some people suggesting varying weights for seasons that are impacted by something like a freak injury. I suppose you could construct an algorithm where you weigh year X based on how it compares to say years W, Y, Z as a percentage of playing time unless you wanted to manually alter the weights for 1000+ players, which is about as much fun as it sounds like it would be.

I do have a proprietary PORN+ adjustment built into Cairo.

In an unrelated note, Yankee killer Ross Gload has been shipped to Florida Marlins for phantom player/cash.
I breathe a sigh of relief. I am guessing Royals will collectively do that as well.

Talking about Matsui before 2009 reminds me of talking about Giambi before 2008. I think Giambi was just lucky to stay on the field as much as he did, and as a result, he had a solid offensive year. Let's hope the same is true for Matsui.
It seems a long time since Matsui had a consecutive games streak...

I knew it. Posters on this site can talk about love of the game all they want, but when their posts don't showup in the standings, they just don't come to play.
(Yes, I was Anonymous yesterday.)
