Gravatar Wouldn't Juan Miranda be considered a legit 1st base candidate?

Even if he is, given his age isn't he at least 4 - probably 5 - years away from the bigs? I'd say if Duncan can have a decent season at AAA - show at least avg defense, and put up an OPS in the 850 range - he'd be a good bet to get some time in 2008 as a Yankee.

Gravatar I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but...with his being a Cuban import, Miranda is going to have to prove himself every step of the way before I give him any praise.

Miranda is older than Duncan.

Gravatar I cannot have Duncan at #10.

Gravatar Fabian, I'm glad you haven't dropped Duncan all the way down your list yet, like Sickels and BA. I still believe in Duncan and think he's got time to turn things around. I'm never going to expect a .300 hitter, but I feel he could add useful power and a touch of athleticism to the position. One quote from the BA Handbook a couple of years ago stood out to me (back when he was ranked something like the #36 prospect in baseball).

It was something along the lines of, "he's not a guy that can fall out of bed and hit. He just really works at it." That's both a red flag and high-praise at the same time. But I like players with a positive attitude who don't make excuses and work hard, which by all accounts, he truly does. I think good things tend to happen to those types.

Gravatar Miranda is older than Duncan.

Miranda may be older than Giambi.

Gravatar I like Duncan.

He had an .840 OPS in AA last season. Perhaps if he were there the entire year like he was supposed to and if he were healthy, he would still be high on other people's lists.

The bigger issue for him, I believe, is his back and how much of a problem it is going to be.

My bad. I was thinking of Montero. I guess sleep isn't overrated after all.

Gravatar The bigger issue for him, I believe, is his back and how much of a problem it is going to be.

this is it in a nutshell. chronic back problems are just that, chronic.

could be something that will plague him his entire career.

Gravatar Yeah, right now, I think where Duncan's career heads will be almost entirely a product of his health.

Gravatar I agree that Duncan's development is dependent on his health. I hope they put him at AA to start the season because the ability to demonstrate a sense of mastery there would boost his confidence. He can be promoted to SWB within a month if he hits. He's only 21. If, by August, he has had a break out season at AAA, he will be back on track as a top prospect.

Gravatar How can you get a back back in baseball?
You stand around in the field all day.
Swing the bat 15 times.
No contact.
No jumping.
Please.

Duncan can't hit.
He'll hit .240 and be a backup.
Should not be on this list.
Bad pick.

Next!

Gravatar The New format is MUCH MUCH MUCH better, cleaner.
SUGGESTION:
The left column is WAY to wide. The screen is out of balance.
LEFT justify the (links) text and make the column like 60% (or so) of its current width.

Looking Good.

Gravatar Duncan can certainly hit. His body just can't physically handle playing right now.

I'd also say that Cody Ehlers is a potential in house candidate in the next few years. He won't be an all star, but he just put up an impressive season in the pitcher's paradise Florida State League.

Gravatar I'm sure Duncan is saying to himself exactly what you said in your summation, Fabina. This next year is his chance to break into the bigs. A big season 2007 and you've got to bet he'll be a Yankee in 2008.

Here's to hoping that the next Jeter, Rivera, Posada and Pettite's are Melky, Cano, Wang, Tabata, and Duncan. And oh yeah, that Hughes kid.

Now if only we had a catcher. What's the 07 draft looking like? I know the golden rule is "take what's best, not what you need" but the MiLB catching corps is THIN.

Gravatar How can you get a back back in baseball?

Oh yeah, bad backs in baseball are completely unprecedented. Never happen. Ask Don Mattingly.

Gravatar Yeah George, well said. Or Todd Helton...as his career potentially falls out of the stratosphere.

Clearly our pal Matt Cohen is a die-hard

Gravatar This guy is NOT a prospect any more. He's had far too many poor years for that. It shows you, along with Battle and Harris, how poor the Yankees scouting in the North East, in particular and in gemeral, has been.
Tom Weber

Gravatar Realistically, is there any reason to think Duncan will be better than Andy Phillips? Or even as good as Andy Phillips?

The only difference I see -- and it is a big one -- is that Duncan was in Triple-A at 21; Phillips went to college and didn't hit the NY Penn until age 22.

But still, Phillips hit .296/.363/.516 in his minor league career. Duncan's minor league career line is .253/.343/.438.

If we are going to say age relative to level is the be-all, end-all, why not compare Duncan to Bronson Sardinha, who is 23? His career line: .269/.352/.404. Less power, but more speed.

I don't understand why Duncan is even in the top 20, let alone the top 10.
