When guests give treats to shy house cats, that usually gets them out of the closet. It takes some time though.

Nio--
Of course, that's a great idea that I forgot. We had a good friend who used to cat-sit for us. The first time she came over to meet Bonsai she brought kitty treats. She laid down on the floor so she could see him under the bed. She talked to him, and calmed him down with treats and kindness. He loved her. Most of our houseguests are just not quite up to that level of compassion.

Oh, Bonnie Boy. What a strange loveable fellow he is. When I come, I'll bring treats and lie on the floor with him. He's worth it!

Thanks, SMSS. Bonsai is a strange, loveable fellow. I think that sums him up perfectly.

That's kind of how I describe myself. A strange loveable fellow human in my case. You two and Bonsai have good kitty karma together. Yes you are probably co-dependent as are we all it seems. I doubt he'd 'get over it' no matter what so I vote you keep on doing what ever it is you are doing for the rest of his life. He certainly seems to know he's safe from his picture today.
Nice.
Love.
Later,
P.S. I occasionally hide when guests are here but in other less obvious ways. It depends on who it is.

JSK-- ah yes. You and I both hide in other less obvious ways. It's the safety of being invisible. It's probably why I take care of Bonny when he's trying to disappear. I can relate.

If guests are unable to coax him out, leave him be. The guests will leave and Bonsai will come out and be happy once again. Give him extra love and treats once they leave.

Aw, poor Bonsai looks sweet!
We have a diabetic cat who needs two shots of insulin every day. She's also pretty freaky around guests. Maybe when cats aren't well, they become more timid around strangers; it's a survival thing.

Green Knight-- That is such a good point. I hadn't actually considered that Bonsai's disabilities might be part of his shyness around guests. Thanks for dropping by and sharing that insight.

Awww! Poor Bonsai. He is such a pretty little guy! My cats run for hiding places when other people come over. My sis took Saddie to be fixed 2 yrs ago. He doesn't like her, now. Sgt Mango can be brought out to visit and he will stick around, except when the lady who gave him to me came over. He did not want anything to do with her. Maybe he was afraid she would take him back.

Maladjusted Petz R Us.
Almost every cat we've owned has removed herself/himself from the premises when guests come over.
I now have the most beautiful, silly, lovesponge of a dog who will not stay downstairs if *anyone* other than I, including other residents of the house, is around.
While the cats have nothing to complain about--they grew up from kittenhood in the lap of luxury and loving attention--my dog is a rescue with an obvious history of severe neglect, if not abuse.
Bonsai is lucky he found you guys. He's also a real beauty. You've got that nice Coolpix--how about some closeup shots so we can see the pattern of his coloring and the individual hairs? Please?

OWL-- It's good to know that other cats behave the same way. Bonsai was a rescued cat. My sister-in-law found him at work, he was hiding out by her office. He was there for days. He probably ran away from a perfectly fine home because they had guests! (The horror!)
CCorax-- That's it-- maladjusted petz. How funny. If you want to see Bonny a bit more upclose you can get a better look by clicking on the picture. We have some other shots of him in the archives, but I'm not sure they're any closer. Oh, I just remembered we did a post with him holding a mouse at the door. If you click on that one, you get close enough to see his whiskers. It's the post on May 4th Double Vertebrate Blogging. I wish you had a blog so we could see your kitty cats and your lovesponge dog.

hey...I think Bonsai is MY runaway cat!!!!
Actually, our cat Leo has taken up with the dykes down the street. He won't come home anymore. I am heart broken. I feel his rejection deeply.
I need a drink.

I just read your other comment on the haiku post. I'd say your martini has definitely kicked in. Isn't it a bit early? Oh wait, it's probably a four-day weekend. I'd say you're right on time. Cheers!
