Gravatar I see you are getting aquainted with your new toy.

Fun rabbit facts. But where do jackalopes fit in?

Gravatar I've seen pics of your garden, RD. You've given them plenty of incentive to get in!

Gravatar Nio--jackalopes are VERY camers shy.

Gravatar I have rabbits devastating my impatiens. Last year they ate the white flowers. This year they seem more interested in the orange. I'm tempted to sit on the deck with my son's SuperSoaker fully loaded at high pressure and spray the little darlings when they venture in our yard.

There was a pretty dumb John Travolta movie a few years back, and his character was beset by bunnies in his garden. Then he became brilliant via some brain trauma, and party of Hollywood's way of showing his sudden brilliance was to have him figure out how the rabbits managed to get past his fence. It turns out they hadn't. The rabbits were fenced IN the garden and had no means to leave.

But I'm sure you two are more clever than John Travolta.

Gravatar Seavu-- I know, we might as well call the backyard the giant salad bowl. I like rabbits-- they seem so innocent, like all prey animals. But I know there's plenty of food in our front yard for them. The earth has definitely provided!

Gravatar Pablo-- Uh-oh. I feel like I'm having a Homer Simpson d'oh moment. Could they have been here all along and we fenced them in? I don't think so. We actually didn't see any rabbits for months and months-- all winter long. DPR put up the fence in January and February. The grasses were low. We could see from one side of the yard to the other. There was no rabbit activity. Last month we noticed them coming in at one low point where the "rabbit-proof" fencing didn't quite meet the soil. DPR took care of that. But we started noticing them more and more frequently the past few days. Then last night I saw one come right through the lattice in the gate. Wow. Epiphany.
I like your idea of spraying them with water. Let us know how it works out.

Gravatar I don't blame the bunnies for sneaking in under the gate. Your garden is so very beautiful!

Gravatar cool history on the little bunnies. i always think of the killer rabbit from monty python, so i give them a wide berth.

Gravatar The rabbit, the rocks, and the flowers make such a lovely picture. Good rabbit facts, too. Thank you. I have lots of rabbits around here. I was heading out to meet my carpool, Wednesday, and I got up to the top of the park, one of closer neighbors was out of his SUV and was in these people's yard. The reason? There was a domesticated rabbit loose on the lawn. He was going to try to catch it. If I hadn't been running late, I would have helped.

Gravatar Thank you for sharing. Haven't had much time to comment lately . . . but I do enjoy your birds, rabbits, and flowers when I'm on my coffee break.

Gravatar I remember hearing about an enterprising fellow here abouts who heated his greenhouse with NewZealand Rabbits, by making a sort of ground level floor, and then putting the floor for the pants up above. And then of course also ate them. Seems their body temp is somewhere around 100 degrees, and of course they multiply like...well you know. Anyway, I thought this was the sort of story the two of you would appreciate.

I love the little brown rabbits we have around here. I never thought of how animals of prey have an innocent look, but I think you're right.

Gravatar The rabbit through the lattice reminds me of Peter Cottontail. Look at the trouble HE got in to! He had to drink camomile tea in bed while his goodie two shoes sister got there dinner next to the fireplace. I love those Beatrix Potter drawings of rabbits.

So, close to the land kids, are you ready to raise rabbits for food?!?!? They are awfully delicious...espcecially with a huckleberry sauce. Mmmm.

Gravatar P.S.
Abraham Lincoln said, "The greatest fine art of the future will be the making of a comfortable living from a small parcel of land."

Okay, I swiped this from the Metrofarm site, but still....

Gravatar CottonSaddieMango--Hey, I love your name. You do your cats a great honor. I was surprised to read that wild rabbits and domesticated aren't that closely related. Who knew?
SoccerMom--Thanks for stopping by.
Speechless-- I don't know what it is about prey animals, maybe it's they often breed in large numbers and seem less interesting, they just don't inspire awe the way predators do. But they do seem so innocent to me.
Slap Me Silly Sally- Oh no way. We'd never raise rabbits. I am about as close to being a vegetarian again as I've been in years. The longer I live here, the likelier it will be that I will give up meat all together.

Gravatar I've got garden envy again.

We have lots of rabbits around... especially now that they've learned that there's likely to be leftover chicken feed at the end of the day.

Jasmine thinks that they are scary intruders and chases them away.
