Gravatar So you're saying that the female Black-Headed Grosbeak will deceive her mate in order to get him to hang around the house more? Are all females like this? Suddenly I'm seeing all sorts of similarities in my life.

Is that red House Finch the same thing we call a Purple Finch here in Kansas City?

Gravatar That Kingfisher is adorable.

As for the Green bee, wasn't there a marvel Comic character the Green Hornet?

Ah, I've become in everyway so irrelevant since summer arrived. The bees and birds have more cop-on than I do at the moment.

Hello to all out west--way west.

Gravatar That green thing looks to me like one of those experimental CIA miniature robotic hunter-killer flying machines. But maybe I'm paranoid.

Gravatar Purple finch and red house finch are not the same. Purple finches are less common and have no streaks on their whitish bellies.

Gravatar Great photos again. Thanks!

You've rekindled my interest in birding. But, now I need a capable camera.

Maybe Santa will bring me one.

Gravatar Pablo--I looked up purple finches and house finches. The photos definitely led me to believe what I was looking at was a house finch. They do look similar.
Hey Speechless-- How have you been? Nice to have you drop in. Been missing you.
Cervantes-- You paranoid? Well... maybe.
Soccer mom-- I can't begin to tell you the pleasure it is to know that I can reliably photograph the beautiful things we see. So many things were always just out of the camera's range, but this telephoto is remarkable. I hope Santa brings you one, too!

Gravatar such amazing sights, hard to believe they all come from your 'backyard'... for me it's earthshattering to see a white pigeon. thanks for the education too, found it very interesting!

Gravatar Maybe it's me but I think Cervantes is on to something! Great pictures as usual.

Gravatar Nice pictures.

I have no idea what the bug is, but I looked up "metallic green bee" on google, and there are lots of pictures which look pretty much like your bee. Unfortunately there seem to be many species in this genus. Maybe there is a bug guidebook for your area. Or a local expert.

Gravatar Hello R.D., and to the Dread Pirate, and all the rest. Yes, I've been quite out of it for the last few weeks, perhaps in solidarity with Phila's funk...

Actually I finally posted something over on my own blog again. Not sure this will break the dry spell, but still, I'd invite you to come over.

Thanks again for the wonderful pictures.

Gravatar There is a gentleman who left a comment over at The Tangled Bank (this time at Science and Sensibility) who is trying to start a bird watching carnival (this might be good for it - could go on Transistions too) his blog is Bird Treatment and Learning Center
Anchorage, Alaska
in case you want to check it out.

Gravatar The birds sure look great! I'm enjoying all the photos you post. That camera sure takes some great ones.

Gravatar Afarensis--Thank you so much for that heads up about the bird carnival. I am definitely going to try to submit something. Thank you.
OWL-- We love taking photographs. It is an expression of the joy we feel being free and retired!

Gravatar Nice pictures. I especially like the kingfisher. I have been trying to get a pic of one that I see on my way to work. It sits on a line over a pond, but usually is present only when I don't have my camera.

Gravatar I caught a photo of a very similar critter:
http://www.middle-fork.org/archives/2005/05/ autumn_of_the_i.html
They both have bee like features, unlike the flies I see that mimic bees.
