Gravatar Wow! I used to fix things; I found it relaxing to take something apart and put it together again. But I've found the same thing you have; most appliances now are so shoddily built that something breaks when you take it out, you find out it is made of fragile plastic and can't be restored or replaced, and besides, the part that needs to be adjusted is too skimpy to allow for re-connection. And so on. I lost interest.

So I'll look for things by the maker of your rice cooker. Great reccommendation!

Good luck with the move and finding a place.

Gravatar Nice job Roger, Rich says the same thing about appliances nowadays. So do you have a place to stay yet?

Gravatar wow - you turned back the whole planed obsolescence thing! good for you. any idea what direction your nplans will take you?

Gravatar I had no doubt about the outcome of this story.

I hope wherever you land you have an internet connection so the blog will go on.

Gravatar You just sold me a rice cooker

I remember in the 70's, mom coming upstairs after a lengthy (and apparently expensive) discussion with the Sears repairman. I'd never seen her so steamed. She called my father's office at the Chevy pressed metal plant and seethed, "Cardboard! The &#$%-ing washing machine is made of &#$%-ing cardboard! Next thing you know, Chevrolet's going to build &#$%=ing cars out of &#$%-ing plastic!"

Then there was a pause.

Then she said "Oh."

Every best wish for an uneventful move, and may you land in a place you'll love.

Gravatar I just love tools and machines that work well and are designed to last and be repairable. With so many of like mind, I would think that a brand that made such sturdy, repairable, useful tools would be successful.

Oh silly me! No one could afford such common sense frills anymore.

Gravatar Is rice from the cooker substantially better than rice cooked on the stove? I have thought about one of those, but we're in a very small space now and I wondered if it would be worth the squeeze...

Gravatar sticky rice in the works. Yikes.

Good luck on the move, I hope you guys are not without access to computers, though.

Gravatar hey, i have that rice cooker! best of luck on the move.

Gravatar Now, I know that wasn't funny, but I can't help from laughing. First, I've done that very same move and second that photo looks like my brain at this age----so rusty it doesn't always know whether its on or off. You would like T's 'tag sale' museum (The old dinning room), where the disparate parts of at least five freebe computers lie scattered around like Obiwanknobee in the big bang. Peace my friends hope the move isn't driving you crazy. Now that I'm gettin social security we are saving up to return to northern California.

Gravatar One of my earliest memories of my Dad's Dad was his deciding to fix Mom and Dad's Sunbeam toaster when I was about 4. He worked on it all morning and most of the afternoon; Mom was upset because he went through two loaves of bread in the process.

That toaster was around for another 20 years, though!

They make one that looks like it now, but somehow I bet the "innards" are different!

Glad things are progressing with the move; loading and unloading at your own convenience sounds like the next best thing to having someone else do it for you!

Gravatar you GO, Rogie! I wouldn't have imagined a rice cooker with such a complex system. Glad you had a diversion from the mind-numbing task of packing and moving.

Gravatar good luck on the move and finding a new home you really like

Gravatar It's good to see an appliance that can be fixed!

I'm experiencing a vicarious excitement about you and robin moving to Humboldt County. Hearing about your move is making me homesick for the redwoods, the ocean and the coast hills. Even though I've never lived in Humboldt County, I've spent the best of times there.

While visiting my old friend in the VA Hospital in Palo Alto in April, I met two fine people who have been living near Arcata for a long long time. They made me think of you and robin and made me consider again the possibility of living there, too.

Looking forward to future posts from you and robin as you find a place to settle in Humboldt County. I loved the posts from Santa Cruz.

Gravatar Robin & Roger - BEST of LUCK on the move. We will be out of town for a while, so will look for updates when we return next week. HOPE ALL goes well on that road trip south. We're looking forward to seeing where you settle.

Gravatar Nice repair job!
Good luck on that move ... pretty exciting stuff.

Gravatar thanks for all the good wishes for a smooth move. packing is 99% done, which relieves that worry, but gives us loose time to fret about everything else. we have canceled utilities. the truck company just phoned to ask if they could bring the truck today, no extra charge, 'cause they have one in the area. well ok.

we always have internet access! it's a requirement.

i can, and did, cook rice on the stove for years. the rice cooker does the same, but never burns the rice because i forgot to turn it off.

Gravatar the emerald triangle awaits you! and the weather's been warming up, just for you.

good job with the fix-it stuff. just imagine...more things being repaired as opposed to replaced. much less e-waste,that's for damn sure.

Gravatar I once poured about 1/4 C of honey into the workings of the bread machine before I realized that the pan wasn't in it.

Don't ask.

Good luck with the rest of the move. Friday! Woo hoo!

Gravatar Congratulations on the repair job! I'm so totally ungifted in this eara, I fear I would have thrown the whole thing out. Re: toasters, I attribute all my woes with these machines to the double-up effect--the toaster-oven. Either the damn thing should be a toaster, or it should be an oven. As it is, it does neither job well.

Gravatar AlhoHA friends! Happy Trails! "On the road again...."
