Great quail! Looks fat and happy to me. Check out my raccoon and red breasted sapsucker. My step mom didn't believe me (about the sapsucker) until I showed her the photos!

'Home' looks like a fun place to be but it doesn't sound like it. I'm sorry Roger (you old geezer) about your back. It's not always easy for our young minds to remember our bodies are.. ahem.. aging. I've done that stooping walk before. I thought it was going to last forever but it healed. Now if I could just get my head on straight. Be well my friend.
Robin it's really so generous of you to take and share these great pictures. I know it takes a some effort. It's like letting us into your journal. I love it and look forward to it like a little highlight of my day. How are you doing being the care provider/nurse? I miss you.
Later.

I'm glad you're home again. It's the best place for healing anyway.
I told all of those birds that you'd be returning soon, so they must have just gotten there from Missouri.

Tweaked back? I know the feeling. I tried to move a large rock in our yard last weekend. I felt the tweak coming, so it was not too bad. Why can't I learn not to use my back when I move those rocks?

So lovely to peek into your garden! As I think I said recently, I know it's what's within that attracts what comes along in the outside world. Good luck with the tweaked back, Roger. I know how that hurts... Think twice next time before that "heavy work"!

Good to hear nature is calling on you. I know you really wanted to have that greeting. It's the same here..a "flock", no kidding, of Robins was in the front lawn today! Siskins, Bushtits, various Juncos, House Finches, Chicadees, Towhees, Nuthatches, squirrels, and now hummingbirds have ALL been seen just in the last couple hours. Flying squirrels were feeding all night long. Spring is pretty glorious in the Northwest, isn't it? Long and slow. Best wishes to Mr. Gimp....I did last pruning and dormant spraying yesterday on shrubs and trees. I am sore today.

kathy a-- Yes, a grand bird party, invitation extended to all.
fc-- I was happily surprised by the procession. A true delight. Roger is getting better everyday. Thank you!
sky-- Roger is on the mend, so I think we won't need to find a chiropractor. We do remember all the old exercises and stretches from our previous chiropractic experiences, so we use those.
Heather-- Nice sapsucker!
jsk-- Roger was up and able to cook dinner last night. He was a little tired afterwards, but he is getting better all the time.
It's interesting to be back here. I wish we weren't so far from our loved ones, 'cause we'd stay. The wildlife is just so grand. The weather stinks though.
pablo-- As long as you are sending critters our way, how about a little bobcat or two?
Mark-- I think we always remember at about just the moment our backs start to complain, sometimes the message is a little too late.
DougT-- We love when the quail come with their little army of babies. They are incredibly cute.
rain-- The birds definitely cheer us up. I couldn't believe how uplifting their songs were yesterday.
Peter-- When we first arrived home we had a few birds at the feeder, now a week later, the yard is literally in constant motion with wings. It's fantastic. Roger is fast feeling better.
annie-- When I see all these birds, I am reminded of the old group The Yardbirds! Thanks for your good wishes.

Mark H-- I forgot to mention the chickadees! I never see a nuthatch, though. Yes, we had a "flock" of robins here too. I was surprised to see so many. There's one we keep our eyes open for, he has a tiny stick that protrudes from his left shoulder. We've seen him for two seasons. We're looking for him now. It's getting to be the time for hummingbirds, warblers, and swallows. I can't wait.

DAWN!! I just realized that I didn't respond to your comment. My apologies. We were overwhelmed by this homecoming. I think we may have missed these feathered friends more than we had realized! We'd like to imagine that the feeling is mutual. Hah!

I bet you are glad to be back in your own space. It's our nature, I think, to become attached to 'home' with its own charms and peculiarities.
Tell Roger to lay off the heavy lifting for a while. My 87 year old father will work as long as can, and then pay the price in sore muscles for days afterward. He doesn't seem to make the connection---it's like stopping eating before your brain knows your full! (Not that I'm comparing my father to Roger!)
take care

kathyr-- The male California Quail is one of the prettiest birds, not very colorful, but stunning.
linda j-- I'm so glad to hear from you! I was just wondering how you are. Yes, we're glad to be "home" but still planning on trying to sell the place in this very lousy real estate market. Roger's doing better.
valown-- We love seeing the quail, especially when they bring the family. Cute cute cute.
Nina-- Seeing all the birds really felt like the true homecoming. I was actually surprised by how much it made my heart soar. Definitely old friends.
Dave-- It's our favorite parade too!
coffee-- You may seem some birds while you're on the road. Definitely cardinals in Virginia.
monarch-- Roger is on the mend. We were so glad to see these birds.

Home is where you wanna be ..... (sung in Simon and Garfunkel voice), especially when home has so many neat residents.
I particularly like that you like mallards and share photos of them.
Feel better soon, and enjoy being back where you belong.

zilla-- Yes, it's green, but it's also grey all the freakin' time here. I think I would prefer brown and sunshine, at this point!
isabelita-- the healing process can be a very fickle thing. But the dealy-bopper on the quails' head is a thing of beauty always!
wren-- I like these mallards in particular because they come into our yard and swim around our very tiny pond. They only come a few times in spring, so it's a delight to see them. BTW, I thought of Simon and Garfunkel a zillion times this week. It's great to be back home, home is where I want to be...

i missed you! i mean, we blogged while you were away and you posted pix - but you post differently when you're at home. can't nail it down, but something more grounded. we're getting some of our little fellows back - we also feed 'em through Wild Birds. a bit pricey but we have never found such quality and nutritional value.
roger, it's simple: no more heavy lifting. oh, heat and ice as well. feel better.

Wow! Birds of a feather, how beautiful. Even this far North things are stirring and the March winds howl. The Canadian Geese are back, pooping on everything, but are too beautiful to shoo. They are annoyed that the Waloomsac River is swollen and their safe sandbar tangle nests are flooded. So the are landing on the pond island. Cardinals are everywhere, scarlet and exquisite. Last week a convention of about fifty robins appeared to pluck worms from the spring fed bog strip that runs just underground, across the lawns to the river. This earliest time of Spring has always been my favorite, so that by the time of lilacs, tulips and blood root We are absolutely risen in wonder. Best healing wishes to Roger. We know that down time having been sick with the flu for two weeks. Still, in that still, under the covers of a heated blanket comes a great peace not usually available in survival mode. Thanks for visiting recently, it is always such a delight when you do and we so appreciate that you take the time. We look to the day when we can return to Northern California after our karma here is run its course. It would be great to be closer neighbors! Peace Mandt & Bodhi Dog
