Of course, the liberals in this country would say that military conscription after serving a sentence would violate the 8th Amendment (even for murder).

As a liberal, I want just the reverse: mandatory draft (army or civil service for 2 years), but keep the murdering (or raping or thieving) scum out!

If someone is convicted of a crime, sentenced, and serves the sentence, then have they, in fact, repaid their debt to society? If so, then for how long after the sentence should society continue to punish a convict? If not, then why doesn't the sentence repay the debt to society?
If it's not possible for sentences to repay one's debt to society, then why are we jailing people at all, rather than seeking more permanent remedies?
