Gravatar GL it's always great to visit your site and gather both wisdom and wit!

Gravatar As always, Thanks Robyn.

Gravatar Amy, I wasn't aware that Disney was trying to create a market for 4-9 year old boys. At this age you can hardly get them in the bathtub, at least that's my experience as the mother of 2 sons. I think you're really wise to help children deconstruct the media. I'm all for it. I'll check that out.

Gravatar Yep, exactly. I don't have ads either...so you see my point.

I'm very concerned about the 'mining of childhood' for a buck, and profiteering on the backs of kids viewed as 'wallet access'...that's what I'm getting at.

You can see this in my recent post on 'Packaging Boyhood' where Disney's trying to import a 'market demand' for cologne for 4-11 year olds that doesn't currently exist in the U.S. ---That's not a "preference" that's an "opportunity"---they're simply leveraging mindshare to create an insecurity where there isn't one. (imho)

That's why I'm involved in media literacy/deconstruction as behavioral counter-marketing!

You can see that post here: http://www.shapingyouth.org/blog/?p=655

Gravatar Amy, by teaching students to ask good questions about the news you are helping them to be thinkers and problem solvers rather than pawns of the media. I thought others might be interested in this process... one that develops leaders of tomorrow.

Amy the only thing I might say is that ads target folks preferences. I hate to see youth as the target of ads. I know we live in a consumer society, but my life means so much more than to be thought of as a mere consumer. Guess I'm somewhat of a rebel in this. You can see I do not have any ads on my site.

Gravatar Hi Robyn, Amy Jussel here, thanks for including me in your terrific round-up. (I would've been here to thank you sooner but the typo on my surname (should be "u") caused me to miss seeing the link, sorry!)

Anyway, I'm working on a piece about neuroscience and all of the Orwellian brainwave gizmos claiming to track purchase power in the ad world...so I was wondering if I could send you some links from Ad Age cover stories recently to solicit your feedback/brainpower on this issue, particularly where it pertains to biz targeting kids?

Also, there's the whole notion of biz/Google growth tied to data mining of brain/behavior/online digital tech footprints, such as this piece Jeff Chester wrote about here in the Nation
http://www.thenation.com/doc/200...0071015/ chester
So I'd like to get your read on that, too...

No rush, as I'm backlogged in a big way, but it dawned on me that your insights would be fascinating on all counts!

Thanks in advance for considering, Robyn!

Best, Amy Jussel

Gravatar LOL, Jeremy...

Gravatar I'll stick it in my diary.

Gravatar Bob, I seem to bound out of bed wondering where my experiences will take me next...

I heard a scientist speak the other day who is partly in charge of establishing a Sustainability Department and major at a local university. He said technicians today are being trained to solve problems we do no yet know about...

Take it from there... Your last statement is right on!

Thanks for your thoughts...

Gravatar I don't know about you Robyn but it seems the older I get, the more I realize just how little I know... (this has been going on for some time now)

I think/fear when I get to the finish line, I will be completely ignorant!

Gravatar Thank you, Mel. Takes some time to locate good posts representing all the multiple intelligences. I want to share posts from which others can benefit.

Gravatar Joanna, I love the natural world - that's why my husband and I decided to live in the country and I've made the most of it. To partcipate in this Blog Action Day suits what's important. Thought this would be a great opportunity to alert others, too.

Thanks for your work to spearhead interest.

Gravatar Hi Robyn,
Thank you for the mention. You have certainly bought a lot of differing blogs together under one umbrella. Nicely done.

Gravatar Well you certainly reached some dizzy heights with this round up Robyn!

Thanks for the mention of Blog Action Day. I really like the way the organisers have set up the challenge as an open invitation to share ideas, words, learning, debate. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of it.

Joanna
