Jeanne, I couldn't agree more. When I write, I truly need to be away from email. I can be easily distracted by email.

Robyn,
One approach that's fairly essential for me to get anything done is to close my e-mail program while I'm working to prevent incoming e-mails from distracting me from my work.

Jeanne, you are doing well to take a 20 minute power nap since power naps rejuvenate your brain in the afternoon. You don't sleep long enough to get into a REM cycle, but you do sleep long enough to kick-start the rest of your day.
Jeanne, like your approach to get right to work since distractions can prevent us from achieving all we want to accomplish.
I find if I prioritize in a checklist, that I stick to business better.
Do you have any approaches for keeping distractions at bay?

Robyn,
Since I'm actually on an earlier schedule right now, I do find myself tiring fairly early in the evening these days. But I often nap in the evening (or should I say "nod out") and then sometimes find myself completing other work afterward.
When I'm on my natural, later schedule and rise later in the morning, though, I do tend to be fairly fresh in the late afternoon and early to mid-evening (sometimes even later). But, of course, that's to be expected.
When I recently attended my local community college to complete my A.A., I preferred a class schedule that began late morning to early afternoon and ended late afternoon to early evening. I hated early morning classes--though I didn't always have a choice!
No matter what schedule I happen to be on at any given time, though, like you, I do prefer to get going with work right away--though with so many distractions online, I often fall prey to procrastination!

Jeanne, seems breakfast makes a difference to our Cicadian cycles.
Since your mind is most fresh in the afternoon and early evening because that is when you would prefer to take tests. Perhaps that indicates you work best during those hours though you stay up later and get many other tasks completed.
On the other hand, I love to get going with work as early as possible. It seems my mind works best first thing in the day. At times I awaken early, eager to begin working.
Good thing we can work with our own rhythms to get the best from our brains!
Thanks so much for going deeper, Jeanne.

Jeanne, thanks so much for taking the quiz a second time to see exactly what might push you toward the middle on Cicadian rhythm, though you stay up until wee hours.

Robyn,
Just checked the quiz again, and the factors that made the difference for me were these:
1) I have a very good appetite 20 minutes after rising. (My appetite is always good on arising, no matter what time it is or how little sleep I've had! High metabolism, I guess.)
2) I would prefer to both take tests and have my core working hours during the mid-afternoon and early evening--rather than only during the evening. (That isn't to say, of course, that I don't often burn the midnight oil writing blog posts and/or articles or surfing the web, though, because I definitely do!)
My current schedule is an earlier one, though--during the week, at least. And I must admit, it is a bit of a struggle!

Took the quiz a little while back. (Just didn't have time to comment at the time.) As I recall, there were a few questions where I found myself "on the fence." (Aren't there always?) I'll have to look at the quiz again to refresh my memory, though. Stay tuned for an update.

Hmmm... Jeanne, seems that you would have scored stronger towards night owl on the survey. Did you often find yourself on the fence choosing between two answers? Was it hard to nail just the right answer?

Robyn,
I'm a night owl, too--which can make it very difficult to get up in the morning!
When I took the quiz you linked to in your post, I came out as only a moderate night owl; yet I'm routinely up until the wee morning hours.

Lillie, the way you've organized your schedule to fit your Cicadian rhythms is brilliant. I sense we'll see even more folks doing this.
Thanks for your insights since you're the first night owl to comment.

Robyn,
I'm a total night owl and am blessed that I can work my own schedule. Although I do have to vary occasionally if I have outside appointments, I usually work from late afternoon through early morning, then sleep in the morning when others are going to work. My clients know to call in the afternoon or evenings, and I'm able to work when I'm most productive.

Brad, I'm actually an early bird, too. This new research surprised and intrigued me. Looking at the opposite view can help us see a bigger picture. Thought my readers would appreciate it as I did.
It doesn't surprise me that you're an early bird!
