I'd think it should be turned on once they get in the car, but no sooner.

As a customer I would prefer it not be switched on until I get in, but some people act the bollix and try to get time to finish their pint so if they're not out maybe 5 mins after you're hailed then flick it on

I'd say a couple of mins after you pull up. The people wanting the taxi have obviously requested it and asked the waiter/doorman to sort it out.
The waiter/doorman should have the chance to walk back inside and say "Your taxi is here" - if they aren't ready and take ages, you should be paid for that; but it takes a min to gather up bags, coats, kids, etc and head outside.
2/3 mins after you are hailed, no more, IMHO.

I'd agree with Elly.
I've often seen taxis arrive on my road and have to wait 10 mins or more, (outside a neighbour's house) before anyone comes out to the car.
It's ridiculous and I feel people who behave like that should be charged for their arrogance.
I'd say.. allow a set time such as 5 mins and then start the meter ticking!
btw Roy - you're welcome to leave a link on my site now that the spotlight is off. Thanks for your tact on this. I've added you to my blogroll too :D

I think the 5 minute rule is fair, I never add the call out charge, I often wonder if I should?

There should be a call out charge, and the meter should start when you get in.

Well, as soon as your asked to wait, your hired, aren't you? You can't take another fare, can you? So, the meter should be started then.

I guess if you add a callout charge then you shouldn't add the waiting.... and vice versa, and if it's quiet and you're glad of the job then maybe add neither?

In our area they dont switch it on until you are in the cab also they ring you on your mobile first to make sure you are ready and know they are outside waiting which i think is an excellent idea.

the meter goes on when you stop, just as if the doorman himself is getting in, if the people inside are lazy enough to have someone else flag a taxi for them, they should at least pay for any waiting time it causes. why do people always expect the taxi driver to accept the short end of the stick. a callout charge would be a bit cheeky.
