Surprised I didn't see Tolkein or C.S. Lewis on this list--but Douglas Adams was an inspired choice. I have read nothing by Tom Wolfe before The Right Stuff, but that is still my favorite book of his.
You can quibble on the margins with this list, but a pretty good effort. I'm surprised by the number of American authors on the list.

As I was reading over the list I was confused too. To Kill a Mockingbird doesn't seem like a 'cult' book. It's a great book, but I don't see many people looking to be Scout.
I think to include Von Däniken gives the list the Cult status but most of these are just damn good books. And some aren't.
Aren't cults something someone follows? I like the definition one person had that "one I've bought more than 5 copies of yet can't seem to keep in the house and/or a book I've read more than three times." If that's a cult book then I'm sorry to say many of mine aren't even on the list. Asimov, Heinlein, Tolkein. Those are my cult.

Also 12 completely read, with several more started but unfinished. A pretty good list.
