Fantastic piece!! I am also of the kind that likes to help in kind rather than money. Getting an opportunity to make a difference, really makes a big difference to your own life as well!!

Nice post. Heartwarming.
Btw, you can fund a child's education and health needs through CRY (among others). Rs 1,200/- for a year's funding.

hey ramki,
I hve been a silent reader of your posts for a year or so and managed to do most of your threads and your growth as person is very visible.
We dont need to do extraordinary things to be great, just doing ordinary things consistently demarcates us from others. This act of yours just emphasises on that fact.
its great reading ur threads & this one does inspires....
gud luck.

It reminds me once again to favor only if you are impressed with the motives of the taker. I am made to think that every stranger asks for money is being honest. I have added a link to this pot in my blog. WELL DONE, Ramki. Keep up the good work, man.

I am generally impressed with the current young generation. Many have started thinking about the needy.(Maybe all there needs are met now-a-days, in abudance!). It's a good trend that has a potential to bring huge revolution to the country which is in dire need of fundamental change in the everything [infrastructure, education, poverty etc.,].
Good work.
BTW, I am getting a feeling that you have become more sentimental and philosophical now-a-days, as evident from recent posts.
Take care..

This brought tears to my eyes. Not because I am sentimental, but for a completely different reason.
I paid Rs. 200 per year as fee for my education in a government school. And I did my schooling with old books, mostly donated for free. Sometimes, till the time I got books from somebody, I had to go to school w/o any books and my teachers were considerate enough, coz I was a bright student too.
Now, when I tell my friends here that government subsidies for education is good and that we gotta do something for the society, I get branded as a 'socialist'. Ramki.. Hope that kid gets into an IIM too. Great job!

Ramki,
One more among your legion admirers!
This story is one more reminder that we spend a lot of time very disconnected from a lot of realities around us - and it takes incidents like this to not only remind ourselves that there is human endeavour everywhere, but that it is honest and often heartbreaking. What you did is very admirable!
There is however a nagging thought - often, we are inspired to do more, to involve ourselves a lot more when we come across these instances. But, in my experience, the act of giving money somehow serves to dampen this desire and soon we forget all about it. For example, could you have gone back to the kids house or school the next day to pay his fees or helped the kid/his sisters with their books? What would this involvement cost us? What does it take to make this involvement happen? I am sure these issues bugged you in those intervening moments before you pulled out your wallet.
May your tribe increase!
Best Regards!
Girish

ya man, way to go, sometimes we feel humanity is all dead, but then one such article pops up.
just one observation, can any of us do this again. if u just answered yes, GOD BLESS YOU.
if u hesitated, well, then something inside you has died...
if u said no, trust me u just signed a death warrant of a kid somewhere out there..

glad more people touched than cynical. I am amongst the latter; even if the shop were open, he could have "sold" the book back to the same store keeper; this has been known to happen; anyways, u felt good about yourself @ Rs.500. Not a bad deal.

In a world where emotions and ennui clog
Conveying acts of kindness through a blog

hi Ramki
Let me know if you get to know any organization that does support.
I need more information on such an NGO that would help such kids.
The problem in assortment is that one should know the operations of such an organization...that the money really goes for a good purpose. If you know of any, pls let me know.
This was a touching one.
Thanks

Hi Ramki,
You have done a great job man. But don't know does this thought of helping poor comes to our mind everytime we hv pizzas, we spend money on our luxzuries. In short, jes want to make a point that things can be better if evil quotient should decrease with every passing time.
Cheers,
Rohit

I know you as a good / nice tech/ppl manager. This post helped me know your otherside as well.
Incidently I myself have come across similar situations and have paid the school fees myself. But the difference is, somehow I didn't believe those guys fully (I felt really bad for thinking so later ) so went to the school myself and paid the fees in person.
Best Regards

Hi wow, I just stumbled on your site from the league of mba bloggers. Your story really touched me. Do you know of any local school or organization that directly helps children pay for school fees etc? I would very much like to make a contribution, but I would prefer to do so directly to the school or a local organization vs' making a donation to a large charity foundation. If you do manage to find a phone number, or address in your area, I would appreciate it if you would email me about it.
Kind regards,
Leah |
