Take a hard-core, journalism-focused writing class. Or three of them. I'm talking grammar, parts of speech, "affect vs. effect," "because vs. since," story composition, headline writing -- all that jazz.
The ability to write well -- really, really well -- absolutely cannot be understated.

To thrive in public relations, you must have three key ingredients to your personality: determination, enthusiasm and you must be organized. Also, you must be quick and efficient.

Also, you need to be committed to life-long learning. This business changes faster than autumn leaves in Duluth. You need to read, try new things, be open to failure, be aware of successes.
