Gravatar Interesting article. Social media has indeed changed the PR landscape. I've linked to this article from my blog at Pushingenvelope.com.

Gravatar Indeed, very interesting and we've linked to it as well. We're in fact about to send out our first SMNR, which should be the first of many.

No, it can't be a cure for bad practice but it will allow you to provide a much more compelling story proposition for journalists and bloggers as all the resources that you need will be delivered on a plate.

Gravatar Hi Catherine,

Thanks for the mention (if you haven’t already guessed I work at webitpr).

We don ’t think the social media news release will eradicate the good ole press release in the near future. As a distribution company, our bread and butter still lies with the regular every day press release.

However, as a company that ’s focused specifically online for the last seven years, we are seeing first-hand the way in which social media is beginning to change the PR industry and the wider media in general.

We ’ve distributed quite a few SMNRs on behalf of our clients with a lot of success. Obviously a SMNR can’t ‘make or break’ a news announcement – that’s up to the PR people creating the news and writing the release but what it does do is give more options to the end user – that end user being the blogger.

Many PR bloggers are saying that PR execs should (depending on the audience they wish to target) issue both kinds of release which I’m inclined to agree with.

Thanks again,

Stephen

Gravatar You know, this post reminds me of the dot-com craze of the late 90s. After everyone raced to hypothesize, analyze, dissect, and spend tens of millions on solutions to prevent Y2K computer system crashes - and the extinction of bricks-and-mortar was predicted - the market corrected itself. Everyone ultimately realized that online commerce was an evolution of - not replacement for - commerce models.

I think the same holds true for communications tactics - five years from now, this will be run of business.
