Gravatar I was already planing on reading The Secret History this history, but you made me want to start it as soon as possible.

Gravatar You are so right about favourite books.. they may not be the best but they're what speaks to us, personally, the most.

Gravatar I feel guilty when I don't like a book too! Isn't that funny?

I really enjoyed The Secret History; I went to a small liberal arts college, but it was in the Midwest so none of the New England elitism was there. I keep meaning to read her other book as well!

Gravatar Nymeth, I remember reading it in two days! Granted, I was on Christmas break at the time, but I remember being swept up. I hope if you pick it up that you enjoy it!

Gravatar Claire, it's very true. I try to be very sensitive to people's favorites, because I know so much can inform why we love certain books. And thinking about my favorites--they are all so different! But they all mean something to me.

Gravatar Eva, I generally try to assume an author is doing the best he or she can, so yes, I often do feel a bit guilty. But I just got mad at Francine Prose! She's even written a book on writing!

I haven't been able to stick with The Little Friend, but I keep trying.

Gravatar I admit that I feel badly too when I am not enjoying a book. I find myself wondering if I missed something I should have caught.

I like your definition of a favorite book and completely agree. Reading, for me, is such an intimate and personal process. The books I like best are often the ones that speak the loudest to me on a personal level. Most of the time, anyway.

I haven't read The Secret History, but I have heard wonderful things about it.

I hope you have a great week!

Gravatar Hello Literary Feline! Glad to see you out and about. Hope you'll be feeling better soon!
