Big Blue Wave's Comments

Gravatar Hi there. Sincere apologies for the disappearing posts: if it's any consolation, it's been happening to Red Jenny's messages as well (so whatever nefarious force is at work, it's not ideological!) It appears to be a problem with the Akismet Spam system. Thanks for your patience, and be patient if you send something that doesn't appear: we will be examining the filters regularly.

Good discussion, too...one of the ones that restores my faith in blogging.

Gravatar That's okay balbulican. I didn't think it was ideological, just one of those crazy glitches.

Gravatar Joke. It was a joke, my dear. I know you know me better than that.

Gravatar Interesting discussion on the role of conscience and the magisterium.

Remember the Winnipeg statement on Humanae Vitae. After all the elements are taken into account (including the magisterium) one makes an informed decision based on your own conscience. The Winnipeg statement did not say one's conscience automatically coincides with the magisterium. Otherwise, what's the point?

Gravatar Whoa, Balbulican your sense of humour went way over my head there.

Don't get me started on the Winnipeg Statement. It was HORRIBLY FLAWED. The bishops basically contradicted the universal magisterium (that's been known to happen).

The point is to MAKE your conscience corresponde with the Magisterium. That's the whole point of being Catholic. To be of one mind.

Gravatar MAKE your conscience correspond to the magisterium. You mean do violence to your conscience and that's called freedom of conscience. Give me a break.

I have always had a soft spot for the bishops's enlightened Winnipeg statement. The key architect of the statement was my old moral theology professor, Father Ed Sheridan S.J, a solid progressive. The rest of the world marvelled at the acuity of his work.

Gravatar When you sign on to be Catholic, you are acknowledging that the Magisterium is the guardian of moral truth. You're not making your conscience correspond to another human, subjective, point of view, but to God's truth.

And if your conscience does not believe the Magisterium teaches God truth, you are not, in substance, a real Catholic.

"The key architect of the statement was my old moral theology professor, Father Ed Sheridan S.J, a solid progressive. The rest of the world marvelled at the acuity of his work."

Except people who actually follow Catholic doctrine.
