DG wavered a bit on this mornings WCHL news show. He was announcing the rebroadcast of the Tyson show this evening and said (paraphrase) "that the controversy would grow over the next couple days". He seemed to be responding to recent criticism in the "knowing" banter he had with Ron S. but it was tough to tell (plus I was getting fading problems out in Chatham).

I watched the PBS UNCTV interview with great interest. My impression was that D.G. Martin continually broke in, interrupted and tried to re-direct Timothy Tyson when I wanted to hear Tim, not D.G.
However, the interview did give Tyson and "Blood Done Sign My Name" a great deal of publicity. That's good.
The focus of all that has been written about it for public consumption so far, concerns me. Should we not remember that the murderers of Henry Marrow who died on May 11, 1970, (in a much more public slaying than did Emmitt Till) are still walking around, free as birds.
What's wrong? Are we in North Carolina less interested in justice than our counterparts in the "deep south?"
What do the legal experts who know much about this think?

That's a great question, Frank. I haven't heard anybody talk about reopening the case, and I don't know enough to know whether it's even a possibility. But I think you're right to remind us where the focus ought to be.

I would agree with Sally Greene's assessment of what I intended to say, both in my book and in the interview with D.G. Martin. And I would agree that D.G. emphasized the utility of violence in Oxford, not that he's endorsing it, and also tried to connect it to questions of terrorism abroad. Oxford 1970 and the Middle East 2005 aren't the same situation at all, and one would not want to make too direct a comparison. I said and intended something somewhat different: yes, this is what happened. But I think we would do well to remember that D.G.'s job is to encourage discussion. He's being provocative. He's trying to make people, and maybe even me, a little uncomfortable by pushing us to the end of our logic. It's a useful thing to do, even if it isn't precisely appropriate. It makes us think hard, as evidenced here by Greene et. al. and that is good. He's doing his job.
One more thing. I think D.G. wants to stir up some real discussion. Doesn't it strike y'all as a little strange that this book has not been even slightly controversial? It got what can only be described as a rave review in the CAROLINA REVIEW, otherwise a radical right paper. John Hood of the John Locke Foundation has endorsed UNC's selection. All we're lacking is a blurb from Jesse Helms. As the US cavalry sentries say in the old Westerns right before the Comanches attack, "It's quiet out there--too quiet." Hmmmmm.
