There is absolutely nothing new about Shaw and his admiration for Stalin. Indeed, he also admired Mussolini and Hitler (both, of course right-wing figures) for various reasons, though he also deplored, for example, Hitler's anti-Semitism.

I will be curious to see how Reagan's role is characterized in the evolving world war that we are currently in.
How will Reagan's support for a Stalinist secular Saddam (who merely used religion cynically as a way of manipulating people) against the religious values of democratic Iran.
Or Reagan's support for terrorism as a means to break up the Soviet Union or terrorism in South America to seek to overthrow governments there, not to mention support for authoritarian dictators in Asia.
Conservatives hardly fare better in my view than liberals when it comes to discarding the essential values that we like to imagine defines the character of the USA.
And Bush has certainly quickly discarded any principles when it comes to his policies, in my mind adopting the same point of view of Saddam: "I am the law" and "they are not like us and not worthy of any inalienable rights because they are evil and I can't be bothered to prove it" with hardly any conservative opposition, and with liberal opposition met with accusations of being anti-American.
