I've been long saying this same thing over at my blog. Our whole economy is based on the mobility of the automobile and that's why public transportation has never caught on to a large degree.
It's doubtful that a large scale relocation of people would ever transpire, so I propose we build adequate public transportation anyway, even though it would be an expensive enterprise. We may have to do it sooner or later.
Oh how I long for public transportation! I used to love that aspect of living in the Boston suburbs. Los Angeles doesn't do public transportation that well.
