Gravatar Wow, its either carry a purse all the time or announce to the school when you are having a period. I did not carry a purse or backpack while in high school. I tried to carry a purse for a while to fit in but found it unnecessary and awkward. I used my pockets to carry any small items (keys, pad, student id, driver's license, money - that's it). I carry a day planner as an adult.

Use stupid school policy to force girls to conform to notions of female.

What point in the curriculum involved in becoming a school administrator does the lobotomy occur?

Gravatar Things I simply do not understand:

How are the supposed to carry their books, pencils, erasers, rulers, etc, all the misc crap that teachers seem to require? Are they supposed to go to their locker between every single class? If you only have five minutes, as we had, that can be near impossible.

For that matter, what about all the other personal items, like keys, lip gloss, wallets, etc, that teens like to carry? That *I* like to carry?

If the issue is saving these kids backs, why don't they just have a classroom set of textbooks? this sounds to me to be more about the teachers convenience (I was thnking concealed weapons and/or minor distractions) than about the students.

Gravatar When my sister in law was in 6th grade, she went to a school with a no backpack policy. It was to prevent violence and the selling of drugs (!) although the school had no real history of either. It's ludicrous. Until parents start protesting these measures (instead of accepting them as "for my child's safety"), it won't stop.

Gravatar Oh, and to GhostGirl, who asked what kids do with their personal belongings: they carry them in their pockets. At my sis in law's school, books and bookbags were left in homeroom throughout the day (theft was rampant). And there were no lockers. All lockers were removed, again because of fears of 11, 12 and 13 year olds storing weapons and drugs.
