No more odd than Talk Like a Pirate Day (which we followed religiously) or our tendency to wear sombreros during stressful times... at my old job. At the new job it's just one creepy guy photoshopping himself into Madden Football screenshots while we all laugh nervously and my boss wonders why the guy has so much free time.
Laughter is a stress reliever. I'm all for it as long as it's not disruptive.
I guess what you're pointing out is that some group fun is more fun than others. 
I think some work fun is for everyone, but the monkey antics seem more...singular, I guess.
I wasn't sure how to take the whole monkey thing myself. At first, it sounded pretty funny. Then something about the story as I read farther sounded...odd. This kind of humor would go over well with the people on my particular project team at my office, but I doubt the whole office would go for it. Mostly it's funny if you personally know the people mentioned in the story. Every group needs a stress reliever and a good belly laugh, but humor is also very particular to different people.
fun? no. a waste of my time.
not that I am anti-fun, but. give me time; I'll provide my own fun, thanks.
It does seem very individual. I personally don't need any more monkeys in my life.
You got to think. Most of these were taking place when the whole office was less then 10 people. Everyone has a good time.

It sounds like you have some firsthand knowledge of this. I'm not criticizing the monkey antics, but I am pointing out that the sense of fun varies from workplace to workplace. What is fun for some is not fun for all.
I just don't get it. Seems sophomoric to me and a waste of my valuable time. but then, I'm old. don't play video/fantasy games or anything like that.
